How much does an oil & stone driveway cost?

What it costs per square foot.
Oil and stone (also called tar and chip or chip seal) is priced by the square foot, like most paving. A single layer typically runs $1.50 to $2.50 per square foot installed. A double layer, which is two full courses of asphalt and stone and the way we build, runs about $2.50 to $4.00. Most residential jobs land near the lower end of that.

Five things that change the price.
Driveway size
The biggest factor. More square footage means more material and labor. Long rural drives cost more in total but stay steady per foot, so the length of the approach does not change what the surface can do.
Base condition
A solid, well-draining gravel base keeps cost down. If the base needs grading, regrading, or drainage work first, that adds to the project.
Drainage work
Where water has to be given a deliberate route off the drive, with cross drainage or a channel drain cut in, that happens before any surface goes down and it shows up in the number. On flat ground it is not optional.
Stone choice
Our standard is a fully crushed limestone that finishes a cool blue-gray. Specialty stone and decorative blends cost more than standard aggregate.
Access and slope
Tight access, steep grades, or unusual shapes take more time and prep, which can nudge the price up.
The real savings show up over time.
The sticker price is only half the story. Asphalt needs sealcoating every three to five years, and that recurring cost adds up across the life of the driveway.
Oil and stone carries no annual reseal cycle. A light top-coat refresh every five to seven years on a heavily used drive is optional, not required. Over a 10 to 15 year life, that difference often matters more than the gap in install price.

Is oil and stone cheaper than asphalt?
It does cost less per square foot to install, and it has no sealcoating cycle. That said, price is the wrong reason to pick a driveway surface. On most upstate properties the better argument for oil and stone is that it flexes through freeze-thaw instead of cracking, and that the stone surface keeps its grip when the driveway ices over.
What is the difference between single and double layer oil and stone?
A single layer is one application of liquid asphalt and stone. A double layer repeats it, spraying and stoning the drive a second time over the first, which builds more depth of stone and more life into the surface. Plenty of contractors treat the double as an upgrade. We build it as standard, because the second course is most of what separates a drive that holds up from one that does not.
