Oil & Stone Driveways in Owego, NY
Owego is the Tioga County seat and one of the better looking villages on the Susquehanna, with the Front Street historic district facing the river and Court Street running back from it. North of the village the ground climbs quickly onto farm roads and wooded hillsides. A driveway on the flats by the river and a driveway a mile up the hill are two different problems on the same job list.
Two kinds of ground in one town.
Down on the flats the water table is high and the ground stays wet late into spring. Nothing soaks away through a finished surface, so what keeps a drive sound down there is the fall built into the base and edges cut so run-off has somewhere to leave.
Up on the hill roads the approaches get long and the grade does the opposite job, moving water fast and taking loose material with it. Locking the stone into sprayed asphalt is what stops the surface leaving with the runoff.
In the historic district the driveway is part of a streetscape that people genuinely care about. A natural stone finish sits with nineteenth century frontage in a way fresh black does not.
Village frontage and long hill approaches.
Village jobs are usually short, visible and tight on access. The hill jobs are the opposite, several hundred feet off a county road with grade and drainage to solve on the way. Both are routine here.
Properties in the flood plain sometimes have base material that has been moved by water more than once. If yours has, say so, because the base gets checked properly rather than assumed.
