Not if the water is given places to leave. On a long climb we build cross drainage at intervals so no single section carries the whole runoff. That planning matters more than the surface choice itself.

Do you install turnarounds and barn aprons as part of the job?

Yes. They are quoted with the drive and installed at the same time, usually with a heavier base where equipment turns and stops, since that is where the most stress lands.

A drive that climbs steadily for several hundred feet never gives water a place to settle, which sounds good until you realize all of it arrives at the bottom at once. Cross drainage partway up is what stops the lower section taking the whole load.

Winter on a north-facing climb is a different problem from winter on the flat. Ice sits, sun does not reach it, and traction is the thing that decides whether the drive is usable. Stone holds grip that smooth surfaces lose.

Small farm properties run mixed traffic, from a car to a loaded trailer, over the same surface. Building the base for the heaviest regular use is what keeps the rest of it intact.
